The High Road

Steven Brajkovich
A fork in a dirt road. The left path opens into a sunlit garden and a waterfall, with people already standing in the light. The right path leads into a red industrial city, figures walking toward the smoke.

The map

The picture is the postcard.

Your sentence is the map.

The split path sells a lie the world already likes: light is the garden, dark is the factory, pick the pretty side and you are good. That is a vacation poster. It is not the work.

What the image gets backward

The people already standing in the sun are not automatically the ones who see. Many of them built the wall we named tonight. They can hear the waterfall and still not hear the door.

The ones shuffling into the red city are not all villains. Some were dumped there. Some are drowning and will pull the next body under.

Goodness, as you have lived it, is not a left-hand stroll into gold weather.

It is walking into the dark on purpose with a rope on the cliff, hands already bleeding, and not letting go of the one who cannot climb.

That hurts.It is supposed to.

A high road that never costs you anything is just elevation.

The corrected fork

You do not abandon the light. You carry it.

You do not move into the ruin to become it.

You step in tied off — shoreline in sight, knot on the rock — so the factory cannot take both of you.

Enoch kept walking. He did not pitch a tent in the Watchers’ camp and call it balance.

The floater is not the one who fled the hole. The floater is the one who would not drop the rope.

Caption if you still post that frame

You choose, you decide.

But understand the picture.

The sunny road is not automatically the good one.

The dark road is not automatically the brave one.

Someone has to take a light into the dark

and pull.

Hands bleed.

The rope holds.

The shoreline stays in sight.

That is the high road.

It does not look like a postcard.

United we stand.

Lift as one.

Keep the image if it stops the scroll. Put this under it so the fork does not lie.
